Every mother to be is going to receive scads and scads of baby blankets. I mean who doesn’t love them. They are so soft and fuzzy, and beautiful. When you are thinking about getting a baby blanket for a new mom you might want to think of a couple things.

She will be getting tons of baby blankets. There will come a day, in the not so distant future where she will no longer remember who gave her what blanket. A time will also come when she no longer needs baby blankets and will give away the majority of blankets she received as infant gifts.

I know this happened to me, and I felt bad, but I was no longer using them as my little one had grown out of that phase and I had no where to store them all.

Let me tell you how to make your baby blanket be a keeper, and make it past the giving away to clear room for new toddler stuff!

The only few blankets I have left are the ones that were handmade. I kept all the handmade items I received and will save them in a cedar chest to give her for when she has a baby.

This includes one hand made quilt, from my husband’s aunts. (which is featured in the header), one no sew fleece blanket, (that I made), and a few crocheted baby blankets made by friends and family.

I also received a handmade crocheted baby blanket from my mom that was originally made by my grandmother for me. This was very sentimental to me as my grandmother is no longer with us.

So you don’t know how to quilt or crochet?

No problem. There are many places on line where you can find artisans and crafts people who will gladly make one for you. You can try etsy.com or even ebay.com. On etsy you are more likely to meet someone who will make a custom quilt or crochet a blanket for you using specific colors you would like.

You can also make a new sew fleece blanket. They are easy to make, no sewing necessary, and you can easily find instructions online. I made one of these for my daughter and it turned into one of my favorite winter car blankets for her. It was just so warm and fuzzy and with two layers of fleece I was guaranteed she’d be warm even when it got really cold.

Instead of going out and finding the cute baby blankets at Baby Depot, turn your infant gift into a family heirloom that will be treasured forever.
